So it seems all the cool kids have caught on to the hipness of cowls. My man friend works on photoshoots for pretty big clients and he told me a few months ago, I better get knitting because the cowls are all the rage this winter. Now more and more I am seeing them around, window displays at Ann Taylor, Kenneth Cole makes a pretty good looking cowl, along with various other places like H&M and TopShop.

American apparels
"circle scarf" (a.k.a cowl):

One of my favorite stores I noticed was also carrying massively oversized cowls:

Along with a few other places.

At one point, I thought of it as competition - these bastards are taking something hand made and wonderful and mass producing and selling at a cheaper cost than us etsy sellers but you know what?

Fuck it. Mass production has nothing on hand made.

We win.

Off to Baltimore for a few days, maybe I'll knit some more cowls on the way there.

In the mean time, here are a few of my favoite etsy places to get some killer hand mades:

Mi Scusi
Yokoo
Yarn Over Movement
Soft Spoken
Lulu and Loie

So, look who's finally coming out of the wood works. I'm alive, settled back to real life (thanks to my 4 days off in a row). I have a clean apartment, my laundry is done and the only dishes waiting for me in the sink are the ones from the dinner I just made an hour or two ago! These are all very exciting things for me considering I've neglected any "errands" or "chores" I've been meant to be doing over the past... oh... 3 weeks??

I told myself last fashion week I would book myself for at least one job everyday for this season's fashion week which I did infact end up doing but, I also told one of my best girlfriends who I haven't seen in over a year to come right smack dab in the middle of it. This meant working every day, going from place to place to - going out until 4am every night. Even if we rang 4am in in a deli 1 block away from my house because the sandwhiches took 30 minutes to make.

Believe it or not I have been doing some knitting over the past few weeks, I'm not sure if I mentioned or not but my cape - finit! (And dear lord do I love it - if only I didn't let my friend borrow it I may actually have some photos of it for this post). I also finished the Dragonfly socks!! I definitely suffered from second-sock-syndrome. I did not want to finish the second sock, I fought with myself - told myself I'd be better off learning how to magic loop, left them for weeks on end, untouched in the bottom of my purse until last night I finally finished them. I also do not have photos of said socks but promise I will next post.

What I dooooo have photos of are the etsy knits. I originally knit all of these things for a shop I was going to sell in on consignment but alas, this did not work out so into my own shop they go. I was going for a color theme for the most part with all of them - purples/pinks/maroons. The green was a bit random but it was on sale and I couldn't resist.

First: I knit this hat kind of inspired by an Alexander Wang hat I laid eyes on recently but it did NOT turn out at all like I thought it would. I forgot about that whole ribbing making things tighter and stockinette making things looser situation so, I got this. I like it - I appreciate it for what it is.

Secondly, I thought I would teach myself how to crochet on youtube when I bought this yarn. I wanted to learn how to make granny squares and crocheted cowls. Needless to say I failed miserably and ended up just knitting it.

Third, when I was upstate doing my shoot a few weeks ago - the lady who's house we were staying in was an avid crafter. She had a loom in her basement and hand crocheted bath mat's (which I was incredibly envious of) and amongst all the wonderful things I found in her basement, I found a baby blanket that was seed stitch & stockinette all in the same blanket. From that/her I now have this:

Last but not least - this yarn is incredible. If you asked me what brand it is - I couldn't tell you but it is SO soft and SO cozy. It was a bit annoying considering this is 5 balls of yarn in 1 cowl so there was a lot of weaving to be done but, thats what you get when you buy 27 yard balls of yarn.

Sometime tomorrow I will post these guys up on ye ol' etsy shop. Thank you Lenard for taking the photos for me.

I am now working on yet another cowl for the shop and toying with the idea of attempting to remake a top I saw recently at topshop out of this crazy mohair yarn my manfriend got for me... One of these day's I'll actually cast on for it.

For now we will watch "The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" because my man loves Matthew Mcconaughey. Yeah. I said it.

Whats this? I actually have some knitting to post?! Oh why yes, FINALLY!

Firstly, a cute little cowl I threw together. I found this yarn in the bottom of my basket and figured I didn't have enough to do anything too big but, it was perfect for this little cowl which I just listed in my shop. Not quite the season (considering its 95 today) but, soon enough we will have fall.

Next up, something I've been working on for a while - little throw pillows! This is the second one I've made. I have a third that I need to get sewn up and posted but that will happen sometime in the next couple of days when I finally have some time off.

I've been working so much lately I've barely had time to think and on top of that trying to keep some sort of social life has just been killing me. I am going upstate though for work/pleasure for a couple of days next week to shoot with Jimmy Fontaine again and my darling Julie which should be nothing short of amazing.

Off to the post office now before work!!

My trip to LA photos are finally edited and posted up in my flickr. Right after I got back my answer to all the "how was it?" questions was something along the lines of - I love my friends, shopping is awesome but I will never, ever live there again. This is still true but I would like to say - I had fun. It was awesome. My friends in L.A are great. Many thanks to those of you who saved me from my early rising mornings and took me on adventures. Being at the mercy of others with no car is a bit of a pain in the ass but, I sorted it out.

I also bought a million things for my shop that I have been slowly adding day by day. Also - I am going to be making jewlery!! Yay!

A couple photos of course : 1. Dance party at The Bar on Bronson. 2. My best friend Katie has never loved anything more than she loves this cat (well maybe she has but, she really loves her cat Prince). 3. Obligatory "I'm on the beach with palm tree's" shot of myself. 4. The littlest jellybean entertaining herself in the sand in Venice.

I have a couple FO's as well! Just full of photos today -

Lady Arms:
Yarn : 2 balls Frog Tree Merino Worsted in black
Needles : US 5 dpns
Pattern : Improvised - I actually kept track of how I made this pattern - I think I may get some better photos and write it out - post it up on the ole' Rav.

Next up is Missoni Inspired Cowl :
Yarn: 3 balls RY Classic yarns - Bamboo Soft in taupe
Needles : US 6 cic 36" needle

It was a nightmare to knit with such small needles. Same thing, over and over and over and over... I was glad to be finished. I was hoping it would be a little wider but, it's good enough. I like it. I still need to weave in the ends.

I am trying to use the yarn in my stash before I go buying new yarn so I have no sweaters/tops in my near future but, can someone reccomend me something cool to make with 215-240 yds of cotton yarn?? I am stumped.

Today was a big day in the world of the internet for me folks... I re-vamped my blog as I'm sure you have already noticed and I posted 2 new things in my etsy shop.

Eye-Lets Love cowl :
Knit with Debbie Bliss Cashmerino - suuuuper soft and lovely. I finished this on my way to Miami and immediately started a secret christmas present so I've been so engulfed in said secret christmas presents that I haven't had time to get this posted up on ye' old etsy.

Second - Nauti-Cowl :

I knitted this with some left over yarn I had from 'secret christmas presents', I figured why not bang out another cowl and post it up. Its been a while since I updated my etsy because i've been doing this and that and work and sleep -etc... Its tighter than most of the cowl's I make but, I kind of like how tight it is. I thought about keeping it for myself for a minute but I have so many and I'm running out of room!

Thank you new roomate Nick for photographing me.

I'm getting ready to go to Minnesota for christmas, this will be my second year in the past 4 years that I will be with a family that I'm not firmiliar with. The first year, I was in Livermore, CA with my friend Paul who so sweetly invited me to his family's place for christmas after finding out that I was most likely going to be alone. I hate not going to my family for christmas - so many ritual's that I haven't been able to partake in in over 3 years... My mom came down the past 2 years which was lovely but this year, its back to the misc. christmas. It will be fun but, I miss my family.

Here's another blog refferal, I was sent over here today by my best friend io. This girl is 12 years old and incredibly advanced for her age! Cute little fashion blurbs, interviews, shopping refferals... Check it out.

This is a week of dinners for me. Tonight with Tippy, tomorrow is Miss Molly's birthday pot luck... I don't have anymore planned yet but we'll see as the week goes on.

36.

Hello blog world...

So, I bought these 3 balls of yarn leaving me with 336 yds of this wonderfully beautiful yarn that I'm not sure I can get again. I really want to make some sort of shirt/poncho/sweater/something wearable out of them and I'm not sure where to go with it. At first I thought i'd make a really simple raglan cardigan, sew on some buttons and call it a day but I'm not sure I'll have enough yarn...

I'm conflicted here. A cowl? I have so many and make them all the time... Please post your favorite shirts that didn't take very much yarn that you think I would like/love! (Is this cheating? Not finding my own pattern and asking for suggestions?) I mean I would really like one of these but I feel like I should do that in a yarn that is self striping or some sort of color assortment. I could try for the beaded cami because Jen's from Team Knit is kind of amazing. She used US 3 needles... I'd be using 5's or 6's... 617 yds for hers? Hmm... I just don't know.

Halp!

Let me tell you about this creation :

This is a cowl I started working on knitting and mid way decided I was going to excersize my crochet skills. It was an interesting experience. I had to rip back the black baby alpaca more than 3 times because I couldn't figure out how to keep the tension loose enough to actually pull it over my head. I went a different route with it... I wrapped it around both my knees. I figure, my head (which is an especially big head for a girl) has GOT to be bigger than the circumfrence of both of my knees... right? Yes. thank god it worked. So here it is in all its glory... I'm calling it gothic because the crochet reminds of of spider webs (because of course everything having to do with spider webs is gothic?)

It is mighty cold here in the NYC. Time to start thinking about huge warm scarves and mittens and sweaters for FRANK! I think he's almost at the size where if I make something for him now, it will still fit when he's full grown. I'll just have to make it with something stretchy... So expect 'Frank in sweater' pictures soon. Speaking of Frank in things, my mother has told me she is looking for a halloween costume for him. Maybe he wants to be an airplane?

Here's another thing... I am (in the least creepy way possible) really into lurking other peoples knitting blogs... and there are so many out there that I am not aware of! I'm going to list a few of my personal favorites, the must read-er's. Maybe we can do a blog share??

1. Team Knit - Well firstly they are from my home town so I have fun picking out where in the city they are in their photos. The knits are always great, the FO pictures are beautiful and I love the knits in fashion posts.

2. Love is all you Knit - My first NYC knit/blog/ravelry friend. Someone I can totally nerd out on knitting with in person!

3. WeaverKnits - I accidentally found her while I was searching sweaters to knit and along came her Lauren sweater. I knit it, I loved it, I became addicted to her blog.

4. Yoel Knits - Always got a new FO, the newest always equally as adorable as the last!

5. MI SCUSI - Someone I wish I could of met all those times I went to North Carolina and thought to myself "I wonder if I'll ever have friends here beacause I've been here so many damn times without knowing anyone".

6. Stay Fance Free - A girl I knew many eon's ago who fell into the same love for knitting that I did. It excites me. And she is cute.

So, thats just a few... I have many more that I love to read but I will stop myself because I'm moving from being just hungry to somewhat starving.

FRONT PAGE OF ETSY! (me and a common thread was totally random!) YAY!

love, granny.

p.s - i may or may not spend a hefty amount of money on camera from previous posts i've been drooling over for the past 2 months

So, I was emailed a really interesting article from a British newspaper today... I'll put the article in italics so if you're not interested in reading it skim past the italics and get onto the FO's and pictures down below :

Subject: An article from The British Newspaper The Guardian

An interesting view from overseas.

Subject: A succinct editorial from Jonathan Freedland of the British newspaper The Guardian on the upcoming US election.

'If Sarah Palin defies the conventional wisdom that says elections are determined by the top of the ticket, and somehow wins this for McCain, what will be the reaction? Yes, blue - state America will go into mourning once again, feeling estranged in its own country. A generation of young Americans - who back Obama in big numbers - will turn cynical, concluding that politics doesn't work after all. And, most depressing, many African - Americans will decide that if even Barack Obama - with all his conspicuous gifts - could not win, then no black man can ever be elected president.
But what of the rest of the world? This is the reaction I fear most. For Obama has stirred an excitement around the globe unmatched by any American politician in living memory. Polling in Germany , France , Britain and Russia shows that Obama would win by whopping majorities, with the pattern repeated in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America . If November 4 were a global ballot, Obama would win it handsomely. If the free world could choose its leader, it would be Barack Obama. The crowd of 200,000 that rallied to hear him in Berlin in July did so not only because of his charisma, but also because they know he, like the majority of the world's population, opposed the Iraq war.. McCain supported it, peddling the lie that Saddam was linked to 9/11. Non - Americans sense that Obama will not ride roughshod over the international system but will treat alliances and global institutions seriously: McCain wants to bypass the United Nations in favour of a US - friendly League of Democracies. McCain might talk a good game on climate change, but a repeated floor chant at the Republican convention was 'Drill, baby, drill!', as if the solution to global warming were not a radical rethink of the US's entire energy system but more offshore oil rigs.

If Americans choose McCain, they will be turning their back on the rest of the world, choosing to show us four more years of the Bush - Cheney finger. And I predict a deeply unpleasant shift.Until now, anti - Americanism has been exaggerated and much misunderstood: outside a leftist hardcore, it has mostly been anti - Bushism, opposition to this specific administration. But if McCain wins in November, that might well change. Suddenly Europeans and others will conclude that their dispute is with not only one ruling clique, but Americans themselves. For it will have been the American people, not the politicians, who will have passed up a once - in - a - generation chance for a fresh start - a fresh start the world is yearning for.And the manner of that decision will matter, too. If it is deemed to have been about race - that Obama was rejected because of his colour - the world's verdict will be harsh. In that circumstance, Slate's Jacob Weisberg wrote
recently, international opinion would conclude that 'the United States had its day, but in the end couldn't put its own self - interest ahead of its crazy irrationality over race'.

Even if it's not ethnic prejudice, but some other aspect of the culture wars, that proves decisive, the point still holds. For America to make a decision as grave as this one - while the planet boils and with the US fighting two wars - on the trivial basis that a hockey mom is likable and seems down to earth, would be to convey a lack of seriousness, a fleeing from reality, that does indeed suggest a nation in, to quote Weisberg, 'historical decline'. Let's not forget, McCain's campaign manager boasts that this election is 'not about the issues.'

Of course I know that even to mention Obama's support around the world is to hurt him. Incredibly, that large Berlin crowd damaged Obama at home, branding him the 'candidate of Europe ' and making him seem less of a patriotic American. But what does that say about today's America , that the world's esteem is now unwanted? If Americans reject Obama, they will be sending the clearest possible message to the rest of us - and, make no mistake, we shall hear it.'

Onto the knitting -

I've been working away at the knitting the last few days, trying to get some things up on the etsy store, use up some old yarn I have leftover from other projects and I took it upon myself to make a hat pattern. I don't know if you could technically call it a hat pattern because I did use a basic stitch but, I am pretty excited about it none the less. Let me introduce to you :

Flossy short for Florence

Needles : 10 circular 16"
Yarn : Catalina Baby Alpaca Chunky

I am pretty excited about my new hat... Once I figure out how to write the pattern I'm sure I'll post it here...

I named it after my boyfriends grandmother - her name was Florence but they called her Flossy... SO, in leui of that - I am going to be making a mens version and naming it "Rudy short for Rudolph", Flossy's husband.

Another couple of things I've worked on in the past few days :

little media case

soft squishy cowl guy

and on that note, I am exhausted and need a nap.

so, this is my boy frank. my mother was asking me why i didn't have more pictures of him floating around. they are around for sure, i have about 50 on my cell phone. frank is a huge fan of sleeping, eating, peeing and pooping (all over the house). he is 11 weeks old and a little hellion but definitely in the top 3 cutest things i've ever seen in my entire life. it is actually very likely that he is THE cutest thing i've ever seen but, I've seen alot of things so i'm going to place him in the top 3 just incase.

the best friends birthday was last week which bought our friend the mahonster into town from tropical paradise. I've actually been holding her hostage. she has changed her flight 3 times... picnics in the park are wonderful.

I figured out my cowl issue, I had to tear back but, I'm glad I did because i really liked the way this looked simple and small. I also really like the stitch on both sides! I generally only like one side.

I used freshdirect.com today for the first time... I should be getting my deliver between 4-6pm. I will report back with my likes and dislikes. now, I must go and do laundry to the sounds of Foreigner, Aaron Neville, Rod Steward and last but not least... Phil Collins. thank's to my sister in law for helping me compile one of the greatest playlists of all time.

27.

i don't think i've ever posted a picture of my tattoo of yarn. i bought the yarn and needles for a reference but now, the scarf i made out of it belongs to someone on the other side of the pond. people don't see the tattoo very often because i rarely raise my arms up but, its one of my favorites.

my roomate had his fashion week/ launch party last night for the retail store he works at. it was pretty fun, open bar until midnight... which of course leads up to the headache i'm suffering from right now.

i'm half way through the 2nd panel of oranigina. it's almost making me slightly insane... lace pattern so i have to be attentive otherwise i'll end up ripping back god knows how long (like i had to with the first panel) but, same pattern 13 times over. then purl, then pattern, then purl... and over/over/over. SO, i decided to distract myself a little and make a cowl to post up in my etsy shop...

well, i'm about 10 rows deep when i notice... the yarn was twisted when i joined the two sides and now i am unable to make it lie down straight. in my current fragile state, i decided to put it down and not start ripping but instead, post a blog in hopes of someone telling me their secret on how to straighten this mess out...

help?

frank is doing well... a 10 wk old puppy cant be expected not to pee all over my entire apartment 10 times everyday and hide little poops behind my roomates bedroom doors, right? i have to have patience and pray that this crate training method i'm doing right now works.

now, if only i can get him to stop crying while he's in there.

must get ready for work!
happy monday.
